Fishfinder - Page 2?page=2

As anglers, we're increasingly equipping ourselves with fishfinders and other fishing accessories. Electric motors and fish finders (also known as echo sounders) are electrical and electronic devices that are being used more and more for predator fishing.

These devices make it easier to locate fish. However, an echo sounder is not a fish finder! Echo-sounders are tools to help you prospect. They allow you to discover new fishing spots by indicating water depth and temperature and highlighting obstacles (rocks, wrecks, weed beds, etc.).

Fishfinders are devices that emit sound impulses to identify structures, fish and water depth.

The fish finder, an ideal device for prospecting

These days, there are different sizes and makes of depth sounder, but also technologies with varying degrees of sophistication to provide a more or less detailed image of the seabed and fish. Humminbird, Garmin and Lowrance are the 3 main brands of electronics. These brands offer more or less complete models for fishing. Fishfinders come in a range of models and screen sizes. For example, you'll find echo sounders with or without GPS to combine detection and bottom mapping.

The fish finder, also known as an echo sounder, is an electronic device used for prospecting before fishing. Fishfinders emit sound pulses at different frequencies that collide with structures and then rise. As they travel up the transducer, the handset processes the information and retranscribes it for the angler to read.

The sound pulses pick up a variety of information. They detect water depth, soil type (substrate: sand, grass, rock, etc.), fish, forage fish balls and water temperature.

All this information enables anglers to choose the most effective lures and fishing technique to catch the fish they want. With a well-tunedfish finder , it's even possible to recognise the fish that appear on the screen.

Different fishfinders for different boats

Whether you're fishing from the shore, a float tube, a kayak or a boat, you won't necessarily be using the same fish finder. That's why, within each brand, you'll find different sizes of handset with different technologies.

This is because echo sounders use different technologies to give you different angles of view. At Humminbirdwe have :

  • 2D
  • down Imaging
  • side Imaging
  • sonar

These detection modes complement each other. However, some cannot be used from a float tube. Side imaging, for example, requires speed for clear, accurate detection. On the other hand, 2D, Down Imaging and Sharp Shooting can be used from a light boat.

Thanks to Garmin, anglers can discover Sharp Shooting at transducer Live. Sharp Shooting involves using a steerable transducer live that detects moving fish in a small cone. This is an excellent tool for pelagic fishing.

Certain echoes can be selected with different probes. The most common are 50Khz, 83Khz and 200Khz probes. The lower the frequency, the wider the cone. The low frequency is therefore ideal for deep-water fishing, thanks to its wide cone. The 455khz and 800khz probes are generally used for down scanning. The narrower the cone, the more detailed your image will be.

Depending on the brand, you'll also have a choice of detection colour to make it easier to spot fish through weed beds, and to differentiate between depth variations on the GPS and cartography.
